Mothers meet while the children play

A drop-in program for mothers, grandmothers and children, will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at the east Columbia library.

The program, called Mommy and Me Cafe, is an opportunity for mothers to meet and mingle with other parents while children play. It is sponsored by La Leche of Columbia, a chapter of the international organization that offers information, guidance and support to breastfeeding mothers.

Minding manners -- Long Reach Community Association will offer a six-week session of classes for boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, in etiquette, social skills and manners. The classes, which will be presented by Stepping Out, are focused on creating self-confidence and comfort in social situations. Classes meet from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday through Feb. 10, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center, 8775 Cloudleap Court. The cost is $150 for six weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. Also offered:

Ballet with Cindee Velle classes for children ages 3 and older and adults, through March 24. "First Steps," "Pre-ballet," "Combination Classes" and "Classical Ballet" as well as jazz, tap, pointe, hip-hop and modern dance.

Belly-dancing for adults, through March 12. Beginners will meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.; advanced dancers from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.

Beginning bridge -- "Bridge for the Absolute Beginner" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. The six-week class costs $60, plus $5 for a textbook. A drop-in bridge program is offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the same location. Players at all levels are welcome. The cost is $31 for three classes, after which students will be qualified to play. Registration is required. 410-290-5430.

Children's classes -- Kings Contrivance Community Association is offering "Itsy Bitsy Yoga," a Saturday program for parents and babies ages 3 weeks and older, taught by Linda Dobry. The class meets from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The cost is $69; $75 for nonresidents. Judy Milke leads parent-and-child classes for children ages 14 months to 4 years. Classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, depending on the age of the child. A new "Kidzart" class for ages 6 to 9 will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, starting Jan. 27. At the library -- The east Columbia library, 660 Cradlerock Way, will offer "Worms: A Vermiculture Primer" with Susan Levi-Goerlich at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The program is part of the "Gardening Tips at the Library" series. Registration is required. Also offered:

The library will offer "Teen Coffee Break @ East Columbia Library," a chance for young people ages 12 and older to take a break from homework and winter blues, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Assorted coffee drinks will be served, and music is planned. Registration is required. 410-313-7700.

La Leche -- La Leche League of Columbia PM meets the third Tuesday of each month at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way. The group offers support and guidance to breast-feeding mothers. A woman's eye -- The Columbia Art Center, 6100 Foreland Garth in Long Reach village, is presenting A Woman's Eye, an exhibition of work by members of the Women's Caucus for Art of Greater Washington, D.C. The show includes oil and watercolor paintings by more than 20 members of the group who live in the Baltimore-Washington area. The center's Window Gallery is showing Watercolor Artists of Columbia Art Center, watercolorist and instructor Robert Coe is the curator. A reception, which is open to the community, will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 20.
