Vermont dominates reeling Retrievers

Vermont 83 UMBC 63

The UMBC men's basketball team was having plenty of problems at home before last night. Then, youthful, talented Vermont came to RAC Arena and humbled the Retrievers from start to finish in every phase of the game.

Freshman forward Joe Trapani scored a game-high 25 points to lead the sharp-shooting Catamounts, who dominated the boards and shredded the UMBC defense, as Vermont rolled to an 83-63 rout before 1,320.

UMBC (6-11, 2-2) lost for the sixth time in its past eight games and fell to 1-5 at home. The only bright spot was a career-high 23 points from sophomore guard Thomas Young.

The Retrievers fell behind their America East rivals quickly and trailed 49-30 at the half. Vermont led by as many as 25 in the second half.

Vermont (11-5, 3-0) shot 60.4 percent overall, made nine of 14 three-point attempts, and out-rebounded UMBC 34-22. Sophomore guard Mike Trimboli scored 16 points.

"They came in and took it to us. They're young, but they play very well together," UMBC coach Randy Monroe said of the Catamounts, who start two freshmen and a sophomore and feature only two seniors. "We gave up too many easy baskets, and they shot a phenomenal percentage."

Vermont attacked UMBC's man-to-man defense effectively from the outset and simply would not miss. The Catamounts made their first eight shots over the game's opening five minutes. All five of their starters scored to stake Vermont to an 18-6 lead.

Not even nine first-half points from junior guard Brian Hodges, UMBC's sixth man and leading scorer, could offset Vermont's size, shooting and patience.
