Body found during hunt for theft suspect

A city police officer discovered a dead man in a wooded area in North Baltimore yesterday while searching for a suspect who bailed out of a stolen car.

The body was discovered about 2 p.m. in an area of Chinquapin Park that is adjacent to the 5900 block of Northwood Drive. Officers with the Northern District's operations squad were called to the area to look for the suspect. Baltimore County police began the chase and were joined by city officers. The unidentified man's body was found about 10 feet from Northwood Drive on a hillside that slopes down to Chinquapin Run, police said.

A Baltimore County police spokesman said the stolen car suspect was arrested, though his name was not immediately available. Others were being sought in the theft of the car, police said.

Matt Jablow, a city police spokesman, said detectives were investigating the case, and the dead man's identity was unavailable. Police considered the circumstances of the man's death suspicious, he said.

The body's discovery rattled neighborhood residents. Brick rowhouses line one side of Northwood Drive and face the woods where police detectives spent hours looking for evidence after the body's discovery.

"We've had burglaries, we've had car thefts," said Robert Hailey, 54, a resident. "We don't feel safe in our neighborhood."

City seventh-grader stabbed

A seventh-grader at West Baltimore Middle School was stabbed in the right forearm yesterday during an incident outside the school in the 200 block of North Bend Road, city school officials reported.

Vanessa Pyatt, a school spokeswoman, said the stabbing occurred about 3 p.m., nearly a half-hour before the school day ended. Pyatt said school police are investigating the incident, and no arrests were made. Pyatt declined to comment on whether the youth's assailant was a student.

The youth was transported to St. Agnes Hospital, but information on his condition was not available. Pyatt said she did not know what kind of weapon was used.
