Seniors to rally in Annapolis

The United Seniors of Maryland will hold a state legislative rally from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at St. John's College in Annapolis. The theme is "Shaping the Future of Maryland's Seniors."

Participants will meet their state legislators.

Tax-help program in need of preparers

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is recruiting for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which provides free tax preparation at county senior centers.

New volunteers will receive a week of training next month, followed by instruction on electronic filing.

People with an aptitude for numbers who would like to learn more about being tax preparers should call the county's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program office at 410-222-4464 or contact a county senior center.

Volunteers sought to teach life skills

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is seeking volunteer grandparents to work with children for 15 to 20 hours a week.

Activities include mentoring, tutoring and giving advice on life skills, with attention to children in Head Start, special education or those who live in shelters or family-support centers.

Participants must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, free transportation, sick leave, lunches and medical exams. 410-222-4464.


Health screenings -- Blood pressure and glucose testing will be available today from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Arnold Senior Center, 44 Church Road, and until noon at the Annapolis Senior Center, 191 S. Villa Ave. 410-222-1818.

MTA photo IDs -- The Mass Transit Administration will issue reduced fare cards for use on the light rail, metro and transit buses at the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today. You must be at least 65 years of age. Bring proof of age. 410-222-6680.

Movie -- The South County Senior Center will show the movie The 12 Dogs of Christmas from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. today. The movie concerns a girl named Emma who lives in a town that has outlawed dogs.
