Two Freshmen Point Terps In Ncaa Direction

January 01, 2007|By HEATHER A. DINICH | HEATHER A. DINICH,SUN REPORTER

This should be the year the Terps return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in three seasons, because two freshmen have proved they are capable of helping them get there.

Guards Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes have played integral roles through the nonconference part of the schedule and are also interchangeable at point guard. The two combined for an average of 8.4 assists through the first 14 games and have given coach Gary Williams the flexibility to use a four-guard lineup.

Vasquez is a major reason Maryland was able to win on the road against Illinois, and the fact that Hayes remained poised at point guard in such an inhospitable environment showed he could survive at Cameron Indoor. Hayes started the first 11 games until Vasquez earned his first college start against Missouri-Kansas City on Dec. 13. Maryland will host Miami on Jan. 10, the start of an all-Atlantic Coast Conference schedule.
