Steffy Has Line On Starting Job, But Portis Lurks'

January 01, 2007|By HEATHER DINICH | HEATHER DINICH,SUN REPORTER

The University of Maryland's quarterback situation is sure to generate debate in 2007.

Will coach Ralph Friedgen give 2006 backup Jordan Steffy the opportunity he has been waiting for? Or is Josh Portis, the much-hyped transfer from Florida, too good to be a backup?

Odds are Friedgen will open the competition and eventually give Steffy a chance to play himself out of the No. 1 spot.

Steffy played in one game in 2006 - the season opener vs. William and Mary - and threw five incomplete passes and one interception. As a freshman in 2004, Steffy played in six games, completing 12 of 32 passes for 132 yards with one interception. Various injuries have played a part in holding him back, and he redshirted during the 2005 season.

Portis, a sophomore with three years of eligibility left, played in six games at Florida and was 6-for-11 for 81 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He also had 24 carries for 163 yards.
