Schools want fair share

As the Baltimore school system expands many of its elementary schools to serve older children, parents and supporters on the City Council are contending that officials are nott providing all the resources that would be available at regular middle schools. pg 1b

City weighs tax relief

Elderly homeowners in Baltimore could get a big property tax cut if the City Council approves pending legislation calling for a relief plan similar to one recently started in Howard County. But fears of revenue loss to the city could scuttle the measure's passage. pg 1b

Americans pay price

The death of a Texas soldier, announced yesterday by the Pentagon, raised the number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq to at least 3,000, according to an Associated Press count, since the war began in March 2003. pg 1a

Islamic forces abandon town

Islamic fighters abandoned the last major town they held early today and were seen heading south toward the Kenyan border while government forces approached slowly because of land mines, residents and a government spokesman said. pg 7a

Terps defeat Siena, 94-75

The Maryland men's basketball team beat Siena, 94-75, in a sloppily played game at the Comcast Center. Maryland (13-2) turned the ball over 20 times and allowed Siena (6-5) seven three-pointers in the first half. pg 1d

Ravens secure bye

The Ravens beat the Buffalo Bills, 19-7, at M&T Bank Stadium to earn the No. 2 seed in the AFC and a first-round bye in the playoffs. section e
