Where to get your glide on

If dreary winter days are getting you down, go for a spin.

Ice skating is a perfect boredom buster and great exercise as well. Rinks in the area offer figure skating, hockey, speed skating and even curling. If you're a bit wobbly on the blades, there are also classes to get you gliding along.

Here are some places you can test out the ice:

Mount Pleasant -- 6101 Hillen Road, Baltimore, 410-444-1888, on-ice.net / This indoor rink offers skating lessons for children and adults. The rink is open to the public Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $6-$7, depending on the day; skate rental is $2 for regular skates and $3 for hockey skates.

Northwest Family Sports Center -- 5731 Cottonworth Ave., Baltimore, 410-433-4970, northwest icerink.com / Open daily to the public, with select night hours as well. There is also speed skating and pick-up hockey for adults. Admission is $6; skate rental is $2.

Mimi DiPietro Family Skating Center -- 200 S. Linwood Ave., Patterson Park, Baltimore, 410-396-9392, pattersonpark.com / Open to the public Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The skating center also hosts the Patterson Park Stars hockey team's games. Admission is $4; skate rental is $2.

Glen Burnie Town Center --North Arundel Center, 103 Crain Highway, Glen Burnie, 410-768-0634 / This outdoor rink is open to the public every day through March. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger; skate rental is $2.50.

Piney Orchard Ice Arena -- 8781 Piney Orchard Parkway, Odenton, 410-672-7013, www.usa rinks.com / This indoor rink has figure skating, hockey and other programs for skaters of all levels. Adult admission is $6, child admission is $5; skate rental is $2.50. Public session times vary.

Columbia Ice Rink -- 5876 Thunder Hill Road, Columbia, 410-730-0322, columbiaicerink.net / This indoor ice rink is open daily to the public. The rink also hosts figure skating, hockey and skate lessons. Admission is $5-$6; skate rental is $2.50.

Gardens Ice House, -- 13800 Old Gunpowder Road, Laurel, 410-792-4947, thegardensice house.com / This arena offers three rinks for hockey, speed skating, figure skating and curling. Public skating is offered daily. Admission is $5-$6; skate rental is $3.50.

Ice World -- 1300 Governor Court, Abingdon, 410-612-1000, iceworld.com / Open to the public Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Ice World features two hockey-sized rinks and a variety of skating and hockey activities. Admission is $6.50-$7.50; skate rental is $3.

Skate Frederick -- 1288 Riverbend Way, Frederick, 301-662-7362, skatefrederick.com / Open year-round and featuring two NHL-sized rinks, this site offers daily public skating sessions, figure skating, hockey and synchronized skating. Admission is $5-$7; skate rental is $2.75.
