Thomas Alan Norris, a former mechanic and motorcycle racer, died in his sleep Tuesday in his Cockeysville home at the age of 49. The cause has not been determined.

Born in Cockeysville, Mr. Norris graduated from Dulaney High School in 1976.

A motorcycle enthusiast, he competed in races from the age of 11. In 1974, he became the American Motorcycle Association East Coast Regional Champion for flat track racing. He raced competitively until the early 1980s.

Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Norris worked as a transmission mechanic at the family business, Norris Transmissions in Cockeysville.

In 2001, he became the caregiver for his ailing father, Robert A. Norris, after the death of his mother, Alma L. Norris.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, 10 W. Padonia Road in Timonium.

In addition to his father, Mr. Norris is survived by two brothers, Robert C. Norris of Reisterstown and Ronald T. Sunkel of Bel Air.
