`Rica' DQ'd

`Yolanda' wins Squan Song

December 24, 2006|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

Yolanda B. Too won the $50,000 Squan Song Stakes at Laurel Park yesterday after La Chica Rica was disqualified.

La Chica Rica passed Yolanda B. Too at the top of the lane and was driving to victory when she angled in front of the favorite. Her missteps under jockey Oliver Castillo forced jockey Jeremy Rose to check and steady Yolanda B. Too.

After listening to an objection by Rose, the stewards reversed the order of finish, elevating Yolanda B. Too to first and disqualifying La Chica Rica to second. The new 1-2-3 order of finish was Yolanda B. Too, La Chica Rica and Mint Landing, with the winner paying $3.20.

"I didn't want to claim foul because Oliver did everything right," Rose said. "But that horse is ignorant. I have been on her before [two victories at Delaware Park] and she is nasty."

Said Castillo: "My filly was leaning in and I kept pulling her out but she was fighting me. That cost Jeremy's horse, who was intimidated."

The winning time was 1 minute, 25.28 seconds for the seven furlongs.

Yolanda B. Too came into the race with impressive credentials, having competed in graded company five times in her career with a second-, a third- and two fourth-place finishes. The Squan Song was her first added-money score and pushed her earnings over $300,000.

"She ran a good race," Rose said. "I know this isn't her best distance, but she was game."
