John Roland Morris, a retired warehouseman and auto enthusiast, died of unknown causes Friday at his Essex home. He was 55.

Mr. Morris was born in Baltimore and raised in Essex. He was a 1967 graduate of Kenwood High School and attended the University of Tampa in Florida.

Mr. Morris managed warehouses in Tampa before moving to Sykesville in 1998. He lived more recently in Essex.

"When he was younger, he raced his Mustang, which my father, Don Alger, helped keep finely tuned," said Joanne Nickens, a niece.

Mr. Morris also enjoyed speed walking.

Services were yesterday.

Also surviving are a son, Roger Morris of Baltimore; a daughter, Christina Morris of Tampa; his mother, Mildred Morris of Essex; two brothers, Thomas Morris of Bel Air and Gary Morris of Dundalk; a sister, Barbara Ann Alger of Essex; and several other nieces and nephews. His marriage ended in divorce.
