Body of woman found beaten in backyard

The body of an unidentified woman was found yesterday morning in the backyard of a house in West Baltimore, and police said it appeared that she died from blows to the head.

Western District officers responding to a 911 call about 9:30 a.m. found the nearly nude body behind a rowhouse in the 700 block of N. Fulton Ave. in the Harlem Park neighborhood, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman.

Moses said the woman's head showed signs of having been struck multiple times with an unknown weapon, and that it was not known if she had been sexually assaulted.

City teen faces gun charge

City school system officials yesterday identified the 17-year-old who was charged Monday with bringing an unloaded gun to school.

Michael Daye is being charged as an adult on three counts: having a handgun on his person; possession of a firearm by a minor; and possession of a deadly weapon on a school property, said Joseph Sviatko, a spokesman for the city state's attorney's office. Daye is a senior at Thurgood Marshall High School, not Dr. Samuel L. Banks High, as officials previously said.

Sviatko said a court commissioner initially set Day's bail at $250,000, but a judge lowered it yesterday to $25,000. He was held at the Baltimore City Detention Center.

Marshall and Banks high schools and Thurgood Marshall Middle are all located in the same building. School system spokeswoman Vanessa Pyatt said school police conducted a routine weapons search at all three schools in the complex, which is located near Moravia Road and Sinclair Lane.

According to court documents, the search was conducted in the parking lot near the school entrance. About 9 a.m., Daye was found with an unloaded .32-caliber silver revolver, but no ammunition.
