Man dies of gunshot wounds

A 28-year-old man was found shot in South Baltimore early yesterday and died from his injuries a short time later, Baltimore police said.

Police found the victim, Kenneth Worrell, on a sidewalk in the 800 block of Bethune Road in Cherry Hill at about 12:20 a.m. Suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso, Worrell was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 2:30 a.m., police said.

The shooting was the second on the block since Saturday night, when a 15-year-old was seriously injured by an unknown assailant, police said. Police said there was no indication that the shootings were related.

Wife held in fatal stabbing

A Joppa woman arrested and charged in the fatal stabbing of her husband was ordered held without bail yesterday by a Harford County District Court judge.

Eveline Anna Maria Bergmann, 46, faces first- and second-degree murder and assault counts in the death of her husband, Jeffrey Bergmann, 48. She called sheriff's deputies to their home in the 600 block of Anchor Drive in Joppa after midnight Friday and said she had repeatedly stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife during an argument, according to charging documents.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said the couple had been drinking at a bar before the incident.

Eveline Bergmann is a librarian at Harford Community College. Jeffrey Bergmann was a biologist at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
