SPROUT: AN ORGANIC SALON

925 W. 36th St., Hampden

410-235-2269 Hours: 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday-Friday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday

Stylist Rachael Epstein knew her hair salon would end up being her second home, so she chose a place she would like to live: Hampden.

"It is a real community," she said. "I can ride my bike to work and there is a coffee shop and a good place to get soup, and people here support the merchants. And I wanted to be with artists, and there are a lot in this community."

Once she chose Hampden -- over the likes of Canton, Federal Hill and even Annapolis -- husband Alan Kolb, a film editor, went to work converting the storefront on 36th Street.

The brick and stainless steel interior is accented with wood salvaged from the front of the store, and the space is dotted with lime-green chairs for clients.

Sprout features all-natural hair products free of dyes and toxins. "And we recycle," said Epstein, who likes to do "very textured, very free and whimsical cuts," but can do classic cuts as well. She said colorist Leah Taylor "was born to do color."

Prices range from $20 to $60 for a haircut. Color starts at $60. Epstein is looking to hire more stylists. "By summer, I would like to see this place bustling with energy."
