A 53-year-old Sykesville woman who was stepping out of her sister's car was fatally injured Saturday night when the vehicle - without a driver - drifted backward down a driveway, across a street and through a yard, hitting a tree and parked car before striking a house, state police said.

The accident happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. outside the Kingston Circle home of the victim, Janice Parker, who police said was only partially outside the car when it ran downhill and its passenger side hit the tree.

The driver, Sylvia Chenoweth, also of Kingston Circle, had gotten out to assist her sister while the engine of the 2004 Honda was running, according to police.

Neither Chenoweth nor a 73-year-old rear-seat passenger was injured, police said.
