Last week, we noted the year's earliest sunset on Dec. 7, and the latest sunrise Jan. 5. Now Jeff Brauner wants an explanation. "Seems counterintuitive," he says. I agree. Both events should occur Dec. 21, with the winter solstice. And they would, if we all still went by solar time and marked 12 noon whenever the sun was highest overhead. But we go by our atomic clocks, and at this time of year they get out of step with the sun. More? Google "earliest sunset latest sunrise."
