Workshop focuses on estate planning

The Maryland Cooperative Extension and Northeast Center for Risk Management Education are sponsoring a workshop focusing on the basics of farm estate planning.

A workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Friendly Farm in Upperco.

Workshops on such topics as taxes, marital deductions, unified credit, stepped-up basis, gifts and gift taxes, wills, property ownership, trusts, life insurance, special provisions for farmers, agricultural land preservation, and family communication will be covered.

Nominations sought for district board

The Maryland State Soil Conservation Committee is taking nominations for an appointment to the Carroll Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

The appointment will fill the expired term of Donald Maring and will be for a term ending Nov. 17, 2011.

Nominations should be sent to State Soil Conservation Committee, Department of Agriculture, 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Room 305, Annapolis, Md. 21401.

Supervisors must live in the district, which is the county; attend monthly meetings; and have a knowledge and interest in proper land use and the conservation of soil, water and related natural resources.

Nomination forms are available at the Carroll County Agriculture Center, Smith Avenue; or the Soil Conservation district office, 1004 Littlestown Pike, Suite 2B, both in Westminster.

Deadline for nominations is Jan. 8.
