What makes a photograph art rather than just a picture of something that happened?

Nina Berman's powerful portraits of wounded young soldiers who have returned from Iraq show wasted bodies, terrifying disfigurements and gruesome scars - images that go beyond the ordinary pictures beamed back from Baghdad.
