Ashburn, Va. -- For Washington Redskins running back Ladell Betts, a perfect storm of circumstances led to his signing a long-term contract extension yesterday.

Starting running back Clinton Portis' recent shoulder surgery and long-term rehabilitation, as well as Betts' performance since replacing Portis, were key factors in the Redskins signing Betts to a reported five-year deal.
