Ron Weinstein, Howard County's longtime government auditor, was named the county's new budget director, officials announced yesterday.

"Ron Weinstein's in-depth understanding of existing methodology allows us to hit the ground running as we look for resourceful ways to fund our priorities," said County Executive Ken Ulman in a statement. "His keen insight into the county's finances will prove invaluable as we proceed with the budget process."

Weinstein, 60, was appointed county auditor in 1985 after six years as a management specialist and seven years as a supervisory auditor in the Prince George's County government.

"One of my first obligations is to prepare a budget for the upcoming fiscal year that is both reasonable and reflective of my priorities" Ulman said. "Our budget must balance the existing excellence in service for which Howard County is known with new initiatives that will elevate us to the next level."

Weinstein replaces Gale Benson, who was the acting director until the newly elected Ulman administration made a permanent selection for the position.

"I look forward to working with County Executive Ulman as we prepare his first budget," Weinstein said in a statement. "We worked together closely when he was a Council member, and I know he has many exciting initiatives planned for our county in the years ahead."
