'MONUMENTAL OCCASION'

LIGHTING UP

Nope, it's not officially Christmastime in the city until the Washington Monument is aglow. So tonight, call it official. "A Monumental Occasion," the 35th annual monument-lighting and welcoming of the season, kicks off with pre-lighting activities at 5:30 p.m. around the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon. The lighting is scheduled to take place shortly before 7 p.m. The public is invited to come and enjoy choir performances, strolling entertainment, refreshments and a fireworks display after the lighting. Also, area museums and venues, including the Peabody Institute, the Maryland Historical Society and the George Peabody Library, will be offering open houses, free concerts and exhibitions in conjunction with the lighting celebration.
