Bernice T. Garrison, a retired Social Security Administration disability worker who was active in community affairs, died of complications from cancer Nov. 26 at Maryland General Hospital. The Northwest Baltimore resident was 76.

Born Bernice Thelma Lamb in Wilmington, N.C., and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., she attended Hunter College before moving to Baltimore in 1953.

Mrs. Garrison was a Department of Motor Vehicles clerk-typist before joining the Social Security Administration in 1964 at Woodlawn. She retired in 1990 as a disability consultant.

She was a member of the Mondawmin Neighborhood Association and the Western District Police Council. She enjoyed cooking and solving a daily crossword puzzle.

Her husband of 33 years, Richard Garrison, a Bethlehem Steel worker, died in 2000.

Services were held at the New Metropolitan Baptist Church, where she was a member and had been active in Bread of Life food ministry to the homeless.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Wallace of Denver, Darlene Garrison of Seat Pleasant and Denise Salisbury of Baltimore; a brother, Henry Murphy of Glen Burnie; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A son, Hillary Garrison, died this year.
