Appeals arguments now online

December 01, 2006|By Andrea F. Siegel | Andrea F. Siegel,Sun Reporter

For the first time, Maryland's top court provided a Webcast of its oral arguments yesterday, giving anyone with a PC and Internet access a live view of the judges of the Court of Appeals grilling lawyers as they present their cases.

"It was bare bones, but it was a success," said Court of Appeals spokeswoman Sally Rankin.

At its height, some 106 people watched - and the court's server did not crash, she said.

In recent years, the court has been trying to increase its visibility as well as demystify the judicial system for the public, and Webcasts of the top court's oral arguments are part of that effort. The pilot Webcasts are to continue today and next week, then resume for the January cases.
