Tax-help program in need of preparers

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is recruiting for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which provides free tax preparation at all seven senior centers.

New volunteers will receive a week of training in early January followed by instruction on electronic filing.

People with an aptitude for numbers who would like to learn more about being tax preparers should call the county's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program office at 410-222-4464 or contact a county senior center.

Volunteers sought to teach life skills

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is seeking volunteer grandparents to work with children for 15 to 20 hours a week.

Activities include mentoring, tutoring and giving advice on life skills, with attention to children in Head Start, special education or those who live in shelters or family-support centers.

Participants must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, free transportation, sick leave, lunches and medical exams. 410-222-4464.
