College Park -- Before this season, Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams said the 2005-06 Terrapins played the worst defense of any team he can remember coaching. It was a group that allowed the most points per game among the 12 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Yesterday, Williams declined to compare that with the defensive improvement he has seen in Maryland's best start since the 1998-99 season.
