A fair but no-nonsense school administrator

WIRE WATCH: Tootsie Duvall

November 26, 2006|By David Zurawik | David Zurawik,Sun Television Critic

Each Sunday throughout the HBO drama's 13-week season, TV critic David Zurawik will highlight a must-see character or story element appearing in the current episode.

As assistant principal at Edward J. Tilghman Middle School, Marcia Donnelly (Tootsie Duvall) has the Herculean task of trying to maintain discipline and order.

Despite being caught between a numbers-crunching bureaucracy at headquarters on North Avenue and a mind-numbing array of socio-economic problems just outside the classroom door, she not only succeeds, she does so with fairness and compassion. Remember how she rounded up clothes for Duquan "Dukie" Weems (Jermaine Crawford), who was ostracized by other pupils for his ragged appearance?

The Wire airs at 10 tonight on HBO.
