November 23, 2006

Helen M. Daniels, a former college English teacher and active member of Metropolitan Community Church of Baltimore, died of a heart attack Friday at her Catonsville home. She was 48.

Born and raised in Laredo, Texas, Ms. Daniels earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts in 1978 from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a master's in creative writing from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 1980.

After a decade of teaching at City University of New York, she taught English from 1998 until last year at the Community College of Baltimore County's Catonsville campus.

Ms. Daniels recently became a clerical candidate after completing course work at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, family members said.

She was a board member and Bible teacher at the Metropolitan church, 401 W. Monument St., where her memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 2.

"She loved music and poetry, animals and nature, and reaching out to people who needed her," said a sister, Cindi D. Freilinger of Canton, Conn.

Also surviving are her father, Daniel H. Daniels of Beaufort, S.C.; two other sisters, Ann E. Zinsser of Silver Spring and Frances Culley of Pittsburgh; and several nieces.
