Atholton High sponsoring JROTC drill competition

Atholton High School will hold a JROTC drill competition Dec. 2. All county schools with a JROTC program are expected to attend the competition, considered to be the largest in the county.

Teams from Oakland Mills, Howard and Atholton high schools will compete, starting at 8:30 a.m. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m.

The competition is open free to the public.

Meet Santa Claus at Slayton House

Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center will present its 22nd Breakfast and More with Santa Claus at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Dec. 2.

Each child will receive a private visit, a picture taken with Santa and a goody bag.

The "Secret Shop," staffed by elves who will help children buy inexpensive gifts for their families, will be open to children only. Gift-wrapping is free. Shopping will also be available for adults.

Tickets are $5. Columbia lien payers can request a 10 percent discount.

Holocaust remembrance

Cultural Connections, a program sponsored by the Jewish Federation, will present a discussion, "Holocaust and Remembrance," led by Paul Beller, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 28 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.

Young dancers to do `Nutcracker'

The Howard County Central Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, will sponsor a showing of The Nutcracker: An Evening of Ballet for Families, at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.

Dancers from the Patuxent Youth Ballet will present an hourlong performance of scenes from The Nutcracker.

Fencing classes offered for kids

Wilde Lake Community Association will offer fencing classes for children ages 7 and older and adults Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Slayton House.

The winter mini-session will run from Nov. 27 through Dec. 20. Equipment will be provided. Times and costs vary.

Holiday crafts -- Hickory Ridge Community Association will hold a holiday craft shop, offering hand-crafted items from a variety of vendors, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring. Admission is free. 410-730- 7327.

Laughter workout -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor "Another Way to See It" laughter club for ages 55 and older. The program includes 40 minutes of laughter exercises and group sharing, intended to lift enthusiasm, morale and motivation and to encourage improved relationships. Changes in health and personal life are promised. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. The cost is $2 a class. 410-313-7279.

Belly dancing -- Mia Naja al Sephira will continue to offer belly-dance lessons at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. A session is being held through Dec. 12 (with no class Tuesday). The cost is $50. Classes for beginners, ages 14 and older, are held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays; for advanced beginners and intermediates, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students are welcome to drop in for $15 a class. Free games -- Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green will offer drop-in bridge games Tuesdays, Scrabble on Wednesdays and a chance to bring a game to play Thursdays. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth weeks of each month. Drop-in mah-jongg for ages 18 and older will be offered at Slayton House on Wednesday mornings.
