Church to host CPR, safety courses

Registration is open for the Central Maryland Red Cross cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first-aid and other safety courses to be held next month at First Presbyterian Church, 9325 Presbyterian Circle, Columbia.

Adult, child and infant CPR will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 2, and Dec. 16. The cost is $52.

Adult CPR will be taught from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 9. The cost is $45.

Adult CPR and first aid will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 9. The cost is $50.

Enrollment aid offered for Part D

The Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging will offer help with enrollment for Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Medicare Part D). Enrollment is open through Dec. 31.

Bring a list of prescriptions or pill bottles in a bag to obtain advice about a suitable plan and help to enroll in it, if needed. Appointments are preferred. Information: 410-313-7392.

Sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and Dec. 2 at the Bain Center; 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Bain Center; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 8 at Ellicott City Senior Center; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 16 and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Bain Center.

Counselors are available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the Bain Center and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays at Ellicott City Senior Center. Walk-ins are welcome during these times; home visits can be arranged for those who are homebound.

Flu clinics offered through December

The Howard County Health Department is offering flu and pneumococcal vaccination clinics this month and next.

A family clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lisbon Fire Hall, 1330 Route 94, Lisbon. A family clinic will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County, 9325 Presbyterian Circle, Columbia. An adult clinic is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 7 at Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Glenwood.

The cost for adults in $20 for a flu vaccination or FluMist; $25 for pneumococcal vaccination. Medicare Part B is accepted. There is no charge for FluMist for children ages 5 to 11.

Children and adults with asthma, weakened immune systems, a recent history of Guillain-Barre syndrome or who are on long-term aspirin therapy should not receive FluMist. Pregnancy or any medical condition should be disclosed to the technician administering the vaccine.

Classes, services

Affordable care -- Chase Brexton Health Services Inc. has opened its third Maryland site at 5500 Knoll North Drive in Oakland Mills village. The center will provide insured, uninsured and underinsured children and adults with primary and preventive care, as well as mental health and case-management services. It will be the first Chase Brexton location to offer consultations in integrative medicine, combining conventional and complementary therapies. Dental care, substance-abuse services and an on-site pharmacy are also planned. Fees are on a sliding scale, and help is available with state and federal assistance programs. Aquatic fitness -- Aquatic fitness classes are offered by the Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $5 a class. 410-312-9000.

Losing weight -- Individual weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered by Howard County General Hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hospital. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740- 7601.

Support

Terminally ill -- Howard County General Hospital has started a Compassionate Companion Program to help terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers, who receive extensive training, stay with the patient when members of the family are not present. Volunteers must commit to a specified on-call time and come in to be at a workstation each week. Barbra Swann, 410-884- 4580.

Caregiver support -- Winter Growth, a private nonprofit organization that offers assisted living, medical adult day care and a wellness program for senior citizens, offers a free caregiver support group for anyone in the community from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month. NAMI -- NAMI Howard County is offering three free support groups.

A group for family and friends of adults with mental illness meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the day room at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia.
