The skinny on local clubs

Fort Charles Pub

On its Web site, the pub bills itself as "Sobo's best bar, as voted by those who know." We went there last Sunday, and while we're not convinced of its dominance, this pub is a laid-back place to have a few beers.

Where -- 1439 S. Charles St., at the corner of Fort Avenue and South Charles Street

Call -- 410-727-0829

Web site -- fortcharlespub .com

Notable -- There are a bunch of big TVs near the bar, a few video poker machines along the opposite wall, two pool tables and tons of sports memorabilia decorating the place. There are no beers on tap, but plenty of bottles and cans.

Vibe -- Unpretentious. The place is a little run down and can get loud, but it's never snobby.

Crowd -- The pub draws a mostly blue-collar crowd, with the occasional young professional as well.

What to wear -- Nothing dressy or flashy. Baseball caps, jeans and T-shirts reign here.
