Paula Deen Celebrates

If you're a Southern belle, or want to cook like one, Paula Deen has a year's worth of holiday recipes from Dixie.

Some are more authentic than others (collard-green-and-ham-hock pizza is suspect). But the fresh apple cake with raisins and pecans was true to its Southern roots and turned out beautifully. The deviled oysters would have been more appetizing without the hard-boiled eggs called for in the recipe.

Deen's fans will appreciate her family photos, folksy essays and pearls of wisdom that are sprinkled throughout the 224-page book. Example: "I was fortunate enough to be born in the land of the free, but my own personal freedom came about by taking responsibility for myself."
