Self-defense seminar for women scheduled

Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green will offer two two-hour sessions introducing the basics of self-defense for women.

Participants will learn a combination of mental, verbal and physical skills to help avoid potentially dangerous situations and deal with any that may arise.

The seminar will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and will be repeated Nov. 15. The cost is $25. Columbia lien payers can request a 10 percent discount.

Cooking class offers tips to youngsters

The Wilde Lake Community Association will offer a cooking class for those ages 10 to 14, presented by First Course: The Educaterers.

"Death by Chocolate," a chance to learn to make several classic chocolate confections, will be taught from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Slayton House. Participants should bring an apron and expect to taste their creations.

Space is limited; registration is required. The cost is $30.

Columbia lien payers can request a 10 percent discount.

Association to hold holiday craft shop

The Hickory Ridge Community Association will hold a holiday craft shop, offering hand-crafted items from a variety of vendors, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring.

Gift sales will benefit center art events

Slayton House Gallery on Wilde Lake Village Green will be the venue for "Artfully Wilde," a one-day sale of contemporary and traditional gifts sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association.

Work by regional artists - wood boxes and turned bowls, glass, pottery, photography, home accessories, jewelry, note cards, fiber, dolls, prints, journals and other items - will be for sale.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated by the 30 participating artists to support arts events at the community center.

The artists will be available to meet visitors.

Refreshments will be available. Admission is free.

Around town

Laughter workout -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor "Another Way to See It" laughter club for ages 55 and older. The program includes 40 minutes of laughter exercises and group sharing. It is said to lift enthusiasm, morale and motivation and encourage improved relationships. Changes in health and personal life are promised. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. The cost is $2 a class. 410-313-7279.

Belly dancing -- Mia Naja al Sephira will continue to offer belly-dance lessons at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The next session will be held from Tuesday through Dec. 12 (with no class on Nov. 21). The cost is $50. Classes for beginners, ages 14 and older, will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays; for advanced beginners and intermediates, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students are welcome to drop in for $15 a class. Free games -- Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green will offer drop-in bridge games Tuesdays, Scrabble on Wednesdays and a chance to bring a game to play Thursdays. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth weeks of each month. Drop in Mah Jong for ages 18 and older will be offered at Slayton House on Wednesday mornings.
