Group to celebrate Marine Corps birthday

Howard County's Marine Corps League, Staff Sgt. Karl G. Taylor Sr. Detachment 1084, will celebrate the Marine Corps' 231st birthday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Ellicott Mills Brewing Company, 8308 Main St,, Ellicott City. League members will collect toys for the Toys for Tots program.

The detachment for active duty and former Marines is named for Taylor, of North Laurel, who died in 1968 in Vietnam at age 29. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in saving the lives of fellow Marines despite being mortally wounded, according to league member Bill Pastino, a partner in the Ellicott Mills Brewing Company.

The Howard County detachment was founded in May 2001. The league participates in charitable and community events, provides college scholarships, and collects money for wounded Marines, Pastino said.

`Odd Couple' with a twist

Centennial High School will present a female version of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15, 16, 17 and 18 in the school auditorium.

Tickets, available at the door, are $10.

Hollifield school marking 10 years

Hollifield Station Elementary School will celebrate it 10th year with the Open House Party from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Former students and staff members are invited to join faculty, students, staff and their families for an evening of reminiscing. Music and refreshments are also planned.

Mount Hebron driver-ed class

The Mount Hebron Viking Backers are holding monthly drivers' education classes, in partnership with Greg's Driving School. Information or registration: 410- 442-4028.

Youth dance at the firehouse

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a "Get Into The Game" touth dance, for ages 9 to 15, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Those who attend are invited to wear their favorite sports-team clothing. Tickets, available only at the door, are $8.

Artisans and vendors are needed for "Christmas At the Station," the volunteer fire department's craft and vendor show, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Spaces cost $30; to reserve a space: 410-761-6633, Ext. 3.

The show will feature about 25 local artisans and vendors and a Santa's workshop, open from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., where children can make gifts for their families with Santa and his helpers. Children's crafts cost between $1 and $5.

Girls' Club meets at Elkridge library

The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, will hold a Girls' Club, for those ages 11 to 17, with crafts, snacks and fun with friends, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 15. Registration is required.

Help with homework will be available for those ages 11 to 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at the library. Snacks will be provided, and registration is requested.

Chess clubs are available for ages 11 to 17 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all levels of skill are welcome but must know how to play. Registration is not necessary.

Legal services for the elderly

Attorney Paul Nathan will be at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 for the 60-Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program.

Services offered include simple wills, powers of attorney, living wills, small estates and deed changes. The program is open to Howard County residents ages 60 and older. Costs are on a sliding scale.

The program, which is sponsored by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging, requires an appointment and should be scheduled well in advance.

Road construction -- Because of construction on Toll House Road in Ellicott City, Howard Transit Yellow Route service between Long Gate Shopping Center and the Howard County government complex will be diverted to U.S. 29. Intermediate stops on Main Street, Ellicott Mills Drive, Frederick Road, Toll House Road and Old Columbia Pike in Ellicott City will not be served.
