Robert J. Behler, a certified public accountant who worked for the Baltimore County government, died Oct. 26 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, at his Middle River home. He was 54.

Mr. Behler was born in Baltimore and was a lifelong Middle River resident. He was a 1970 graduate of Kenwood High School and earned a bachelor's degree in 1974 from what is now Towson University.

He earned an accounting degree from the University of Baltimore and became a CPA in 1981. He also earned a master's degree in governmental administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993.

Mr. Behler became an employee in the county auditor's office in 1983. He was promoted to insurance administrator in 1995 and retired from that post this year because of failing health.

Mr. Behler enjoyed taking cruises, attending Broadway shows and visiting art galleries. He was an avid University of Maryland basketball fan.

He was a member of Orems United Methodist Church, 1020 Orems Road in Middle River, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 2.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, the former Denise A. Pavell; a daughter, Julia E. Behler, a freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park; his mother, Ida M. Behler of Middle River; a brother, Donald F. Behler Jr. of Bel Air; and a sister, Donna Behler McArthur of Tucson, Ariz.
