Jon McGowan, Arundel, boys soccer

Q&A --

November 01, 2006|By PAT O'MALLEY

A three-year varsity player, Arundel's Jon McGowan is one of 10 key seniors on the Wildcats' Anne Arundel County champion boys soccer team. A forward-midfielder, McGowan had 10 goals and seven assists heading into the Class 4A East regional playoffs this week for the Wildcats (11-2-2). McGowan has a 3.85 grade point average, scored 1,790 on his SAT and hopes to play soccer in college.

Was winning the county championship outright this season one of the team goals this year?

Absolutely. That was our first goal, and we have two more to reach - winning the region, then the states, but we just play one game at a time. It was good to beat Severna Park [4-1 in the county final] and win the championship outright [Arundel shared the title with Broadneck last year]. Losing to Severna Park [4-3 in the final regular-season game] last week, it wasn't a good show, so winning the county championship was really satisfying.

What does winning the county championship mean going into the regional playoffs?

It means a lot as far as teamwork, because that's what it will take. We've got a group of guys [six] who have played together since grade school in the Arundel Soccer Association, so we know each other well, and that translates to scoring.

Is it an understatement to say this team has a lot of camaraderie?

That's the biggest part of our team because we've known each other so long. It's going to be hard to let go of these guys after this year. I wish it was my junior year again, so I would have another year with these guys.

How would you describe coach Nick Jauschnegg's style?

Coach definitely knows what he's doing, and his style of play takes a couple years to get. He likes to keep the ball on the ground and he gets on us. I like a tough coach; he demands we play hard all the time.

What colleges interest you?

I'm very interested in Towson, UMBC and Liberty. I definitely want to play soccer, so that will play a major part in where I go to school.

What will your major be?

Law and criminal justice are what I want to get into. I like watching Law and Order and criminal movies. That really interests me.

In what area do you need to improve?

I need to get stronger and faster. I'm 5 feet 9 and 150 pounds, so I need to be more conditioned to raise my skill level.
