Two men were fatally shot in separate and apparently unrelated incidents between Wednesday afternoon and early yesterday, bringing the number of homicides in the city this year as of yesterday to 226, compared with 223 the same time last year, police said.

No arrest had been made in either case, and police said they were without motives.

The latest reported slaying occurred shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday when a young male was found lying in the street in the 1400 block of N. Milton Ave. in the Broadway East neighborhood bleeding from a bullet wound behind the left ear, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman.

Moses said the victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family members, was taken by a city Fire Department ambulance to John Hopkins Hospital, where he died shortly before 2 a.m.

The earlier slaying occurred Wednesday afternoon in the Upton community of West Baltimore.

Central District police responding to a report of an injured man lying on the front steps of a house in the 1500 block of Shields Place at 12:40 p.m. found a man later identified as Dante L. Johnson, 20, of the 1400 block of Myrtle Ave., suffering from bullet wounds to the face and left arm, Agent Moses said.

Moses said Johnson was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he remained in critical condition before dying at 7:15 p.m.

Metro Crime Stoppers at 410-276-8888 is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in either slaying.
