HCC's Duncan wins regional award

Mary Ellen Duncan, president of Howard Community College, was honored Oct. 13 as the top college executive in the Northeast United States by the Association of Community College Trustees.

She received the organization's Northeast Region Chief Executive Officer Award at its Community College Leadership Congress in Orlando, Fla. The Northeast region includes 11 states, from Maryland to Maine.

Duncan has been president of Howard Community College since 1998.

She has expanded the college campus and services, constructing five buildings, adding three off campus locations, developing a performance measurement system for faculty and staff and expanding the student body by more than 40 percent.

The college enrolls more than 7,100 credit students and 14,000 noncredit students.

Kessler is president of Realtors group

Ilene S. Kessler assumed the office of president of the Maryland Association of Realtors on Oct. 1.

A 20-year real estate professional, she is associated with RE/MAX Advantage Realty in Columbia.

Kessler was formally installed a the association's annual conference in Ocean City.

In 2003, she was appointed to the Governor's Housing Commission, which is charged with identifying the housing needs of the elderly and disabled.

She is also a founding member of the Partnership for Housing Education, the association's nonprofit foundation, which is dedicated to creating homeownership and housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income people in Maryland.

She previously served as president of the Howard County Association of Realtors.
