School board holding meetings Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold an administrative meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

A work session on the fiscal 2008 operating budget will be held at 2 p.m.

Meetings will be broadcast live on CETV, Channel 21 on Adelphia cable TV, and will be repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the following Thursday, and at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Board candidates to attend forum

The Carroll County Student Government Association will hold a forum for Board of Education candidates from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road.

Candidates will have three minutes to make opening remarks, then student delegates will ask them questions.

Forum for students to be held Thursday

The Carroll County public schools' Carroll Educational Television Channel 21 will hold a student forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Community Media Center on Washington Road in Westminster.

High school students will have the opportunity to participate in "Speak Out: Student Town Hall."

Discussion topics requested by students include drug use in Carroll County; bullying and lack of tolerance; lack of activities in the county for teenage socialization; driving laws; and the government.

Time will be allowed for an open forum to discuss other topics.

Scholar program accepting applicants

Carroll Community College is starting the Hill Scholars Program and will accept 20 to 24 students for the fall 2007 semester.

Students who excelled in high school and highly motivated nontraditional students are invited to apply.

Information sessions will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Nov. 16 at 1601 Washington Road, Westminster.

College to hold open house Nov. 2

Carroll Community College will hold an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at its Sykesville Center, 6852 4th St.

Participants can tour the campus and register for classes.

Conference Nov. 4 for young readers

Carroll County's first YREAD Young Adult Literature Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at Carroll Community College in Westminster.

The conference is designed for students, teachers, librarians and college students. Readers ages 13 to 18 will have the opportunity to read books from their favorite genres and discuss them with adult participants.

Students may contact their school media specialists or public librarians for information and a book list.

Jacqueline Woodson, an award-winning author of books for children, young adults and adults, will be the keynote speaker.

Registration for the conference is required through the college at 410-386-8100. The cost is $35.

Master plan update can be reviewed

The Carroll County public schools' 2006 comprehensive master plan update is available at, on the link "CCPS Comprehensive Master Plan Update 2006."

The update includes the strategic action plan, which details actions the school system will take to support state and local goals.

The update also includes information on student performance, financial and spending reports for federal and state grants, and initiatives and data related to professional development, safe schools, and kindergarten and prekindergarten facilities.

Hard copies will be available at all public library branches.

Individual school improvement plans from each county public school also are on the CCPS Web site on "Bulletin Board" under "What's New in CCPS."
