You never know what you're going to see in The Prestige - appropriately, since it's a movie about magic. That uncertainty pervades not only what is seen onscreen, but how it's presented as well, a propensity for the unexpected that keeps audiences on their toes, even as it leads to the occasional question of whether writer-director Christopher Nolan is being honest with his audience.

Then again, most people will be having so much fun trying to keep up that they may not even notice.

The Prestige (Warner Bros.) Starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson. Directed and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Rated PG-13. Time 135 minutes
