NEW YORK -- The best team in the National League was sitting on the brink of elimination and the best pitcher in the National League was waiting to push them over the edge.

Amid all the anxiety hanging over Shea Stadium last night, New York Mets manager Willie Randolph was cool and defiant. Asked before Game 6 of the NL Championship Series whether he felt disappointed, dismayed, or shocked by his team's predicament, Randolph was dismissive.
