Rita E. Wilson, a retired school custodian and homemaker, died of heart failure Saturday at her Gambrills home. She was 78.

The former Rita E. Howard was born and raised in Odenton, and attended Anne Arundel County public schools until leaving to help support her family.

While working at Fort Meade in food service, she met and married Paul Wilson. For the past 47 years, they made their home in Gambrills.

Mrs. Wilson worked for 20 years as a custodian for Anne Arundel schools and retired in 1994 from Old Mill High School.

She was an avid reader and gardener, and enjoyed listening to music.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Miller's Metropolitan Chapel, 1922 Forest Drive, Annapolis.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, a retired bus driver for what is now Bowie State University; three sons, Paul Dennis Wilson, Stanley Wilson and Roland "Russell" Wilson, all of Gambrills; five daughters, Barbara J. Peyton and Darlene Wilson, both of Gambrills, Pam Wilson-Spencer of Glen Burnie, Alcinda "Cindy" Wilson of Severn and Karen L. Jayson of Annapolis; a brother, John Fulton Howard, of Severn; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. An additional daughter, Linda Diane Wilson, died in the 1950s.
