Discussion of BRAC process planned for Wednesday

The Association of Community Services will sponsor a discussion of the military Base Realignment and Closure process and its consequences for the human services community from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Meeting House in the Oakland Mills Village Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place.

Kent Menser, executive director of the Howard County-Fort George G. Meade Expansion Management Task Force, will speak and answer questions.

Admission is free. Those who attend may bring lunch.

`Stepping Out' class to start in November

The Long Reach Community Association will offer a six-week session of classes for ages 8 to 13 called "Stepping Out." The classes, which will run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 6, are designed to enhance self-confidence, and teach positive styles, attitudes, behavior and appropriate manners.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays at Stonehouse, in the Long Reach Village Center. The cost is $150, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property.

Hand dancing show scheduled

The east Columbia 50+ center will sponsor a hand-dance performance by Charm City Dancers at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

Shirley Duncan and her dancers will present the history of hand dancing (also known as swing dancing) and demonstrate basic steps. Members of the audience can join in.

Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

A free jazz performance by guitarist Rob Reason and his group is planned for 7 p.m. Oct. 24. Those who attend should bring a dessert to share; beverages will be provided.

La Leche meets on third Tuesdays

La Leche League of Columbia PM meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way.

The group offers support and guidance to breast-feeding mothers. Pregnant mothers as well as infants and toddlers are welcome.

Book club meeting set for Tuesday

The Parent-Child Book Club at the east Columbia branch library will discuss the book Whales on Stilts by M.T. Anderson from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The club, for ages 11 to 14 with a parent, meets the third Tuesday of each month at the library, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

At Long Reach -- The Long Reach Community Association will offer master classes in yoga today at 8775 Cloudleap Court. Yoga for children ages 6 to 12, with Liz Clark, will be offered from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Yoga with Elaine Sauter for ages 13 and older will be offered from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $15 a class. 410-730-8113.

Hatha yoga -- Kings Contrivance Community Association is offering Hatha yoga for experienced students. The cost is $120 to $130 for 10 weeks; the cost to drop in is $16 a class. Ballet and tap classes for children ages 4 to 6, taught by Sandra Duerr, are offered Mondays. Judy Milke leads parent-and-child classes for children ages 14 months to 4 years. Farmers' market -- A temporary farmers' market has been opened at Kings Contrivance Village Center to offer produce, flowers and baked goods. The Safeway store that anchored the village center has been closed. The farmers' market is at the village center from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

Bridge -- The course "Bridge for the Absolute Beginner" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. Snacks will be served. The six-week class costs $60, plus $5 for a textbook. A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the same location. Players at all levels are welcome to refresh skills, learn bridge conventions and meet friends. Mentoring is available. The cost is $6. Lessons in mah-jongg are also offered at the 50+ Center.
