Roch Around The Clock

October 14, 2006

An Orioles source confirmed yesterday that Juan Samuel will be the third base coach next season and that he's likely to sign a two-year deal, the same length that remains on manager Sam Perlozzo's contract, but the hiring isn't official.

Samuel still hasn't signed on the dotted line because a few more details must be worked out. The Philadelphia Phillies are only willing to give him a one-year deal and won't match the Orioles' proposal.

Samuel played for the New York Mets when Perlozzo coached there, so they have a history.

Team officials spent yesterday interviewing more candidates, and the process will continue Monday.

Rick Dempsey is expected to move from first base to the bullpen, with Larry McCall being reassigned. Sammy Mejias, who worked with Perlozzo in Seattle, is a candidate to replace Dempsey at first.

The Orioles are expected to make a third hire - someone who would throw batting practice and take on expanded duties. But he wouldn't be in uniform for games.
