Groundbreaking today for new Irvine center

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. today at the site of the new Irvine Nature Center, 11201 Garrison Forest Road, Owings Mills.

Scheduled to open in the fall of 2007, the 116-acre campus will include festival space with an amphitheater, gardens, picnic area, trails and various environmental habitats. A new exhibition hall, designed in partnership with the Maryland Science Center, will feature interactive, educational exhibits.

In 2000, the state donated the property in the Caves Valley area of the county for the new nature center. Center officials said all but $1.8 million of the $7.5 million cost of the project has been raised.

The nature center, founded in 1975, is a nonprofit organization now located on the grounds of St. Timothy's School on Greenspring Avenue in Stevenson.

The center, which offers programs of environmental studies and natural science to children and adults, serves more than 16,000 residents throughout the area, 9,000 of them students.

Victim of I-95 accident is identified by police

State police have identified a man who died Thursday in a car accident on Interstate 95 in Baltimore County as Ashok Christopher Dassenaike, 24, of the 900 block of Denrob Court, Parkville.

Dassenaike was traveling north in a Jeep Cherokee near the interchange with the Beltway in the Halethorpe area when he slowed to avoid traffic and lost control of his vehicle, state police said.

Dassenaike's vehicle struck a guardrail and overturned several times, state police said. He died at the scene.

The investigation continues, officials said.
