Some famous athletes killed in plane crashes.

Roberto Clemente

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder died Dec. 31, 1972, on an aid mission delivering medicine, food and clothing from Puerto Rico to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua.

Thurman Munson

New York Yankees catcher died Aug. 2, 1979, in Canton, Ohio, while practicing taking off and landing a small jet he had just purchased. He was trapped in the burning plane.

Payne Stewart

Two-time U.S. Open golf champion died Oct. 25, 1999, when a plane he was a passenger in crashed near Mina, S.D., after a loss of cabin pressure.
