The skinny on local clubs

The Venue

XS

With four levels of lofts, XS is a chic coffee bar by day, an innovative sushi bar in the evening and a DJ lounge at night. Whether eating breakfast or dinner, sipping a cosmo at the bar or sharing the chocolate lasagna on the couches of the fourth-floor lounge, XS guarantees a relaxed evening of decadence.

Where -- 1307 N. Charles St.

Call -- 410-468-0002

Web site -- xsbaltimore.com

Notable -- Sushi lovers shouldn't miss the Crunchie Fire Roll or the Sashimi Deluxe, but it's the DJs every night and the excessively popular cocktail, Sex in the City, that set XS apart from its contemporaries.

Vibe -- Chill yet stylish. Affixed to the unfinished brick walls are a diverse mix of candles, local artwork, plasma TVs and the DJ table, which hangs cleverly between the third and fourth lofts. The music begins at 8 p.m. as the lights are dimmed, keeping the atmosphere trendy but not too loud for conversation.

Crowd -- The dinner crowd blends seamlessly with students on laptops and twentysomethings out for a night at the bar.

What to wear -- During the day, anything goes. At night, the ladies can showcase a cute top and sexy shoes with their jeans while guys should play it safe with a button-down. Bring a jacket, though, as the upper levels can get chilly.
