Social Scene

October 08, 2006|By Karlayne Parker | Karlayne Parker,[UniSun Editor]

Our social landscape reflects what we like to do when we're not doing the chores of life. It is during this free time that we enjoy experiences at places around the Baltimore area that inspire us to see our world differently.

Most recently, many of you attended Macy's presentation of the UniSun Gospel Celebration at the Murphy Fine Arts Center on the Morgan State University campus. The Sept. 30 event was part concert, part contest.

Performances by the Morgan State University Choir and TV One's Jeff Majors were bookends to a competition between five area church choirs that took gospel music to another level. The competing choirs were United Voices of Ark Church, Voices of Praise of New Fellowship Christian Community Church, Pennsylvania Avenue AME Zion Church Worship Choir, Holy Vessels of Berean Baptist Church and Bethel Apostolic Church Mass Choir of Havre de Grace.

After more than two hours of performances, Voices of Praise of New Fellowship Christian Community Church of Baltimore took the top prize of $5,000 and earned the opportunity to record a holiday CD. See a slide show (with audio) of the event at www.baltimoresun.com / gospelshow.

In August, many of you endured one of the dog days of summer to sit in Druid Hill Park and eat food and hear music at the Stone Soul Picnic, which included national artists such as Raheem DeVaughn and Donell Jones. And there were a number of you who took in an Orioles game after visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum's exhibit in the parking lot of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

And in July, the Baltimore Convention Center hosted thousands of people who participated in the Kingdom Conference, sponsored by New Psalmist Baptist Church.
