Display of military memorabilia offered

The Savage Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Faith & Ministry Center, 9032 Baltimore Street.

Jason Jess will present his dog tag collection and other military memorabilia. Participants are encouraged to bring military items. Admission is free.

The Savage Historical Society's 2007 calendar, "Sketches of the Savage I Remember," which features the art work of Laurence H. Whitehead Sr., can be ordered from the society.

Around Town

Classes -- Registration is open for fall classes being offered by the South Laurel Recreation Council. Classes will be held in South Laurel at Montpelier, Oaklands and James Harrison elementary schools. Fitness, Pilates, tai chi, yoga and Latin line dancing are offered, as are tennis classes for children, teens and adults. Hand-dancing, ballroom dancing and country line dancing are also offered. Also on the schedule are classes in self-defense, making scrapbooks, magic, cake decorating, intermediate knitting and chess. 301-776-2805.

Holiday fair -- The South Laurel Recreation Council is accepting applications from artists and artisans for its 31st holiday craft fair, to be held Nov. 12 at Deerfield Run Elementary School and Community Center on Laurel-Bowie Road in Laurel. Artists and artisans will display and demonstrate their work and will accept commissions. Bake sales, refreshments and lunch and door prizes are planned. Nature walks -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Visitor Center is offering a nature hike for children ages 8 to 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday. Participants will identify trees, listen for migratory birds and enjoy the outdoors with a naturalist at hand. Bird walks for ages 16 and older will be offered from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 18 and 20. Field guides and binoculars are recommended for the guided hikes. The visitor center is on Powder Mill Road, between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 197, near Laurel. Programs are free, but reservations are required. 301-497-5887.

Homecoming -- Reservoir High School in Fulton will hold its third Homecoming Hoopla 5K Race and 1-Mile Fun Walk/Run (formerly known as "Le Tour de Fulton") on Oct. 21, rain or shine. Registration is to begin at 7 a.m. The fun walk/run is to begin at 8:15 a.m. The cost is $15 in advance for the race; $10 for the fun walk/run. There is a $5 surcharge for on-site registration. Awards will be given for the first three male and female finishers in a variety of age groups (including older adults) as well as for staff members and students.
