IN A HECTIC, HIGHLY mobile world, people come and go, filling up boxes and crates with belongings, hauling them around the corner or halfway around the world, then unpacking everything when they get where they're going.

The rituals of packing and unpacking, as well as the materials we use for those tasks -- cardboard containers, foam peanuts, plastic garbage bags, sticky tape -- are among the ways we try to maintain the comforting illusion that we're actually in control of all this restless movement.
