September 30, 2006

Michael Gerapetritis, owner of Michael's Steak and Lobster House in Southeast Baltimore, died of cancer Sept. 22 at St. Joseph Medical Center. The Lutherville resident was 64.

Born in Menetes, Karpathos, in Greece, he moved to Baltimore in 1958 and went into the restaurant business. He was a chef at Jimmy's Famous Seafood until purchasing a restaurant in the 6200 block of Eastern Ave., formerly known as Smitty's, in 1990. The business is now operated by his wife and four children.

"I know of no other person who worked as hard, who put others first and loved his family as much as he did," said George Minas, a longtime friend.

Mr. Gerapetritis enjoyed making Greek dishes, prime rib and crab cakes. He was a member of the Greek brotherhood AHEPA, and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where services were held Tuesday.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, the former Fotini Diakomihalis; a son, Tommy Gerapetritis; and three daughters, Sophia Gerapetritis, Penny Gerapetritis and Voula Gerapetritis, all of the family home in Lutherville.
